Chinese Elm Trees, Possums, Moon

The moon has lured me out of doors
as on uncounted nights before,
to note the early signs of spring -
slim wands of elm trees thickening
with nodes where lobes of celadon
and jade will open furry ears.

Blurring tree-calligraphy
on sprays of stars and violet sky,
a host of possums, like weird gourds
festooned beneath the cosmic lights,
a troupe of winter-hungry ringtails
feasting on leaves' tender buds:
furred acrobats, or out-of-focus
roosting heavy-bodied birds…
