Meli
from the island named for Ikaros,
nor for that from Patmos of apocalyptic
fame, nor Kalymnos, whose limestone
rings with songs of divers' epic feats,
not for all those legendary names
and hero-tales of Greece would I
give up my secret joy, this mystic gift
entrusted to me, ferried across aeons
to the house endowed with olive trees
that sing of Kalymnos and Crete,
labyrinths where golden bees
secrete the wildest, sweetest hoards
distilled from thyme and rosemary.
"Meli" is the Greek word for honey.
