Paperbark and Stars

All the hidden sweetness of my hungry-hearted country,
distilled in ivory tufted sprays of fragrance,
trailing crescent leaves,
her torso wrapped in silk-and-vellum insulation from the sun,
native birds in rainbow colours resting in her crown…

All the stars, freshwater pearls, appearing, delicate and shy,
stitched by gleaming seeds of light from spacecraft passing,
far and high…

Paperbark - Antipodean tree of the genus Melaleuca,
having many layers of bark, papery on the outside,
but with a denser underlay, silky and spongy in
texture. The tree of this poem is a Weeping
Paperbark, Melaleuca Leucadendra.
