Voyage to the Cyclades
titanic forces grappled them -
gave them dark, foreboding lines,
scored by impulses of time
with epic moirologhia
for wind and tides.
Daybreak whets its blade
and cuts off half a universe -
isolates a Melian bowl,
a clutch of bitter olives
bobbing in a bath
of squid-dyed brine.
Observe the pockmarked cliffs
where seabirds nest, and asses mutiny;
the stones where every raindrop
meets a jealous doom -
observe the creased rock-faces
as they plunge toward their nemesis:
the black harbour at Amorgos
will welcome you at dawn.
