Dream Catcher

Long ago, the Ojibwe people
contemplated the spider's art -
ephemeral as dew on grass;
wrought with monumental craft.

Arachne's spin on web design
inspired a mesh to filter dreams,
trapping demons in its toils
to transform with sun's alchemy.

They fashioned snares of feathers, twine -
butterfly-nets for troubled minds -
to safeguard sleepers' healing slumber,
shield their dreams from the malign.

In a backstreet far from the buffalo plains
a silversmith gleaned an old idea -
a microcosm of ancestor-wisdom,
fledged to help you soar beyond fear.

Nightmares caught in its web clarify,
crystallise into gobbets of gems,
morphing the psyche's hobgoblins
to garnet, turquoise, cornelian.

Little bird with tortured wings,
stalked by those who would wound and maim,
take this talisman and sleep soundly:
evil can never touch you again.
