Observatory
where ancient, distant stars looked down
on cities of Sumer - Babylon, Ur -
and on nomads of the Harran plain,
grazing their sheep around the towers,
counting flocks as astronomers
trained their gaze on the caravans
transiting lucid heaven...
Warlords ravage the fragile planet;
Inanna wanders the asphodels
in a time of Cain, whose vengeful legions
cannibalise his brother, Abel;
time of paranoia, greed, uprooting
groves that honour peace.
Eye in the sky, refrain from weeping:
beyond such pain, do you see reason?
Inanna: Goddess of the fertile earth,
sister of the sun-god in Ancient
Mesopotamian cosmology, also known as
the Lady of the Date Clusters and
Lady of Heaven. She is the protagonist
in the great Sumerian epic poem,
"Inanna's Journey to Hell".
