Seeds of the Pomegranate

A single pomegranate seed
contains the secret histories
of every pomegranate tree
that ever breathed.

Spilt at the temple site
it signifies old codes, new life,
the mystery of itself and all things
known to die and resurrect.

Such a perfect rosy bead
once enticed Persephone;
exiles in her shadowy domain
partake and are refreshed.

Steadfast centre, sheathed in flesh
so delicate, so pure, so sweet,
carries the wisdom of Demeter,
messages from Elefsina.

Seeds of the pomegranate,
offered to the newly dead,
dye December's hearth with archetypal
rubrics: wine and blood,
invoking forces old as earth
to shape the new year's course and fate,
affirming that in winter's dormant
kernel lies the spring.
