Clean Monday

The last day of Apocreas
Athens gives itself to gladness;
snow dusts the empyrean
of distant peaks; about the dense
Pentelic core, on Philopappou
flowers swarm, offering ephemeral
bright faces to the sky.

Aleppo pines breathe Lenten
pungency across the temple sites
and - soaring from the gleaming rock
like butterflies - the kites.
Coloured hats and coats and scarves
confetti green abrupt inclines
where children's cries attenuate
in airy heights.

The city spins a blue cocoon
about the white Pentelic shrines,
where hands grip cords that bind them
to the winds, feet draw their strength
from hills, and choirs of fabled columns
give young voices back as bells.

Note: Clean Monday marks the end of the Carnival period in Greece (Apocreas) and the beginning of Orthodox Lent.
