Sponge is their obsession,
though some emigrate
to Darwin. Divers stay,
and risk deep seas off Libya
for meagre gains -
a way of life that takes a man
and makes him a lithe captain,
or takes a man and cripples him
for love. Some island women,
it is said, frequent the Cave
of Nymphs, and leave
a strip of petticoat,
to bring them sons.
