The dark Maiden.  Alexander Block

In the distant North, obscured
stands a grim, revered cliff.
Its face sacred and demure,
through far mists looks out for skiffs.

And that rocky face's sharp countours
that reach out to vast blue seas,
ancient legends, which still haunt us,
the Dark Maiden, they call thee!

When in hours of the tempest,
northern sailor seeks relief,
simple legend he remembers -
sees Dark Maiden of the Cliff.

He calls out in ardent prayer,
if the Maiden's face grows soft.
Her wave rescues from despair,
sends him home in its blue trough.

В дальних северных туманах
Есть угрюмая скала.
На безбрежных океанах
Чудный лик свой вознесла.

Тех утёсов очертанье
Бедный северный народ,
По глубокому преданью,
Чёрной Девою зовёт.

В час, когда средь океана
нет спасенья, всё во мгле, -
вдруг пловец из-за тумана
Видит Деву на скале...

Он молитву ей возносит...
Если Дева смягчена,
То корабль к земле приносит
Ей послушная волна...
