It essentially warned against European colonialism and political meddling in the Americas, becoming a cornerstone of U.S. policy and later interpreted to justify U.S. intervention in the region.

No New Colonization: The American continents are no longer open to colonization by European powers.
Non-Interference (Europe): The U.S. would not interfere in existing European colonies or internal European politics.
Non-Interference (Americas): European nations should not interfere with the new, independent nations in the Western Hemisphere.
Hostile Act: Any attempt by European powers to extend their political systems into the Americas would be viewed as a threat to U.S. peace and safety.
Evolution and Impact:
Initial Weakness: In 1823, the U.S. lacked the naval power to enforce it, relying initially on British naval presence to deter other European powers.
Expansion: By the late 1800s, with growing U.S. economic and military strength, the doctrine justified expansion and intervention, notably with the Theodore Roosevelt Corollary (1904) which asserted the right for the U.S. to act as an "international police power" in Latin America.
Enduring Influence: It became a guiding principle for U.S. relations with Latin America, shaping regional policy for centuries.
