Temptation by the devilAt the age of 19, I came across Thomas Mann's book «Doctor Faustus: The Life of the German composer Adrian Leverkuhn, told by a Friend». As soon as I took it in my hands, I felt a kind of nauseating chill. I read it in a feverish state and could not tear myself away – so much so that, while studying at a higher education institution, I read it right during lectures instead of the required subjects. I had felt something similar only from reading Dostoevsky. The most terrible thing is that the book shows no convincing alternative to Leverkuhn, yet my being resisted strenuously. © Copyright: Сергей Добренков, 2026.
