Poetry contest on forty-two themes"In a story from the AD 700s, the emperor paid a visit to the Togu Palace at Nara. He was struck by the beauty of the blossoming cherry trees and lakeside willows at the Southern Hall (Nanden). He began to compose verses inspired by contrasting pairs - for example, spring and autumn, a moonlit night and a snowy morning - and then judged which was superior. He passed the night with courtiers, making music and choosing 42 paired themes for poetry".
