What is malt? What is blended?Malt whisky is a term indicating a whisky made entirely from malted barley, in a batch process in a traditional pot still. This type of still resembles a cooper cooking pot or kettle.Shapes of pot stills vary, and are significant influence on flavor. Malt Whisky or Pure Malt Whisky is a general terms. They do not specify whether a whisky is a Single Malt or a Blended Malt. SINGLE MALT WHISKY simply means that all whisky in the bottle was produced in one distillery. Whiskies from more than 100 malt distilleries are available. The whiskies of each distillery have their own house character, with further variations according to the age, strength and style of maturation. This individuality of character and the overall diversity it represents, has increasingly been explored in recent years. If the consumer particularly enjoys whisky of the Caol Ila distillery, or wishes to try Talisker whisky ,thy phrase Single Malt on the label means that the bottle contains nothing else. BLENDED MALT WHISKY is a blend of malt whiskies from different distilleries. Blended Malts term was introduced in 2005 by the industry’s trade body, the Scotch Whisky Association. The term Blended Malt can be confusing two categories, and it may blurring the special identity of malt and whisky. Green Label contains malts from the islands of Islay and Skye and from the Speyside. It clearly has a lively character. Some malts are designed to highlight the characteristics of a single region, others is to create an own brand for a restaurant or shop. BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY developed in the mid 1800s.Retailers like the Walker family made their own blends in order to offer viable volume of consistent product. Distilling is an agricultural industry, and subject to harvests and weather .The malt distilleries in the glens of the Grampian Mountains ,the valley of the Spey and Scottish islands, continued to impact character to the Blended Scotch Whisky made by Johnnie Walker long after its blends were leavened with lighter whiskies made from other grains( unmalted barley, wheat or maize) ,in column shaped continuous stills. Today, Blended Scotch Whisky implies a substantial proportion of grain whisky. Some argue that the natural dynamic of blending is toward a common denominator, making for whisky that are similar. Over the years Johnnie Walker has added more blends..each has its own character:Red,Black ,Gold and Blue are all Blended Scotches. Green is a Blended Malt. © Copyright: Бэлла 2, 2010.
