Cognac and healthThere is much awareness these days of health issues relating to food and drink and the interest is growing in the extra health benefits of the products consumers buy. I would like to highlight some of the detailed studies that have relevance to people who appreciate and enjoy Cognac. First here some general information in order to put these studies on health and Cognac into context. So, Cognac is by law in France a strong alcoholic drink with a minimum of 40 Alc vol .It is the product that by option can be taken straight as digestive after foods or diluted with varying degrees of ice and water as aperitif .However in spite the flexibility of Cognac it is always subject to the normal caution that it should be always taken in moderation. Cognac is unique product which only originated from the region of Charente in France. It should not be confused with brandy. It is exclusively made from grapes and it is as much a product of a climate and land as the people itself. Its manufacture is the subject if s a strict Appellation control which also enshrined in local and national French law decrees that go back May 1909, though Cognac as been produced to high and excavating standards since the 17th century.90% of the grapes must be Ugni Blanc,Folly Blanche,Colombard. These grapes traditionally have low sugar and alcoholic content. French laws also bands additives, even additives such as sulphates, which can cause an allergic reaction in some cases. This strict laws prohibited in the making of Cognac therefore regard the product as one if the purest and natural available today. Cognac has a exceedingly low natural sugar content. Levels of fermentation monitored and restricted to less than 2-3 weeks. Even at the very early stage the grape juice has only approximately 8% of alcohol by volume. Under the law it must be double distilled, it must use small Charente Copper Stills, the only type that can be used with a maximum load of 25 hl so quality can be monitored in small production units. The whole distilling process by law has to be completed by the 31st March 5-6 months after the picking of the grapes in September/October, the rest of the Charente Stills lie idle in quite silence for the next 6 months to ensure that the quality is never compromised. There are books and articles, and studies and law manuscripts dedicated to the Cognac. I would like to stress a few recent experimental studies and research that has been conducted in laboratories of Society Franзoise de Recherchй in Bordeaux. The antioxidant effect of Cognac has only recently been able to be seen due to a new clinical test the 3 D Test(Damage DNA Detection). The effect is mainly due to the constituents found in oak wood particularly Ellagic Acid which has a strong antioxidant activity protecting the DNA from anti oxidative damage. Unlike Ethanol and a few other alcohols, it has been proved that Cognac has an ant mutagenic effect against a specific group of cancerous substances. This effect is particularly due to the numerous Polyphenolic constituents contained in Cognac ,after aging in oak barrels. The effect of Cognac in reducing the hardening of the arteries gas been tested and it has been shown that the more heavily weighted molecules of Polyphenols contained in Cognac are on of the main agents for chemicals roots trappers or anti-aging activity. The advantage of Cognac in diabetes is a very low sugar content. The amount is very small compared to the calorific value found in alcohol in general and this has proved important in the studies of diabetes-obesity syndrome. The positive effect shown that moderate alcohol consumption has a favorable effect on the surrounding areas of insulin and particularly on the adiposyties. Also polyphenols contained in Cognac have a vascular-protector effect due to the antioxidants properties. Indeed, alcohol in moderate doses has positive effects on the fat or grease build up mechanism and the formation of blood clots, limiting cardiovascular disease risks. However keep in mind that alcohol consumption has to be controlled, limited, in the case of obesity or high blood pressure. Cognac known as a product that has positive effect on digestion and playing a role of protection of the gastric mucus membrane. The amount of antioxidant properties proven to be anticancerus and anti- mutagenic; it’s provide protection from cells oxidative damage.
