Марциал (Marcus Valerius Martialis, около 40 г. - около 104 г. н. э.) был известным римским поэтом, который написал 12 книг эпиграмм. Роберт Геррик вложил некоторые его фразы в свои эпиграммы:

Какая ж это эпиграмма, Лилия? На кого? Стихотворение называется 298. Vertue (Добродетель):
Будь благ! прожить две жизни должен тот,
Кто в первой добродетельно живёт.
Разве Геррик высмеивает того, кто живёт well? Или об этом у Кейна сказано?

In approaching the epigrams of Herrick, we may dismiss with a very few words those of a satiric character. There is little wit in them to relieve the coarseness, and, strewn as they often are among the daintiest of his lyrics, they leave just the same unpleasant taste in the mouth which is produced by the satiric epigrams with which Catullus befouls the pages of his Carmina. The most that can be said for them is that they are neither more witless nor more foul than those written by many another epigrammatist of the Renaissance. It would seem, indeed, that coarse scurrility was at this time looked upon as an essential element in the making of a satiric epigram, and in reference to this it is interesting to notice that Campion introduces into his Observations on the Art of English Poesie epigrams quite as coarse as those of Jonson or Herrick, simply as literary exercises, and in order to illustrate the fitness of trochaic verse for this form of poetry.
The satiric epigrams of Herrick have much in common with those of Martial, but it isionly fair to add that the influence of the Roman epigrammatist is by no means limited to verses of this character. There is abundant evidence that the author of the Hesperides had read Martial with the greatest care, and that, while he reproduced much of his indelicacy, he also had an eye for his terse mother-wit and vivacious fancy. One or two of his gnomic epigrams are literal translations from Martial, and he likes nothing better than to introduce one of his felicitous phrases into his verses,1 or to round off a couplet with some sententious maxim borrowed from the Roman.

Сергей, я написала в своем переводе "прослыть", намекая на тех, кто хочет казаться добродетельным. И почему только вторая жизнь обеспечена, а не десять и т.д.?
А что сказано у Кейна по этому поводу?

СпасиБо за ссылку. Видимо, здесь имеется в виду то значение, которое имела эпиграмма в Древней Греции, т.е. надпись на памятнике, здании, подарке, объяснявшая значение предмета. О сатире, высмеивании кого-либо в этом двустишии речи нет. И у Геррика, когда он смеётся над кем-то, обычно стоит Upon..., часто с добавлением слова Эпиграмма. Ну да ладно. Это не сильно важно...
Кейн выпустил отличную книгу, где комментируется каждая герриковское строка. Но её можно скачать только за деньги, да и то никому ещё это не удалось сделать в России. В общем, остаётся только облизываться...:)

Кейн выпустил отличную книгу, где комментируется каждая герриковское строка. Но её можно скачать только за деньги, да и то никому ещё это не удалось сделать в России. В общем, остаётся только облизываться...:)
