Anna Akhmatova
I neither want to follow psalms and odes
Nor rules of plaintive singing to obey:
In verses I prefer their antipodes
Not in a common way.
You’d be confused to know from what dressing
Without shame the poetry crops up –
Like dandelions at some modest fencing
Or burdocks in the shrub;
Annoyed shouting or fresh tar smelling,
Or a mysterious old moldy wall… –
From such impressions turn out verses telling
To please us all in all.
Original text:
