When this poem was first published in 1890, it was aptly titled
'The Book of Martyrs'. It deals at greater length with a theme
first stated in poem 38. The ‘Sweet’ to whom the poem is addressed
may be Sue. ‘A Kingdom’ is the company of saints in the
kingdom of heaven, and ‘renown’ is sainthood in heaven.
Richard Sewall tells how Mabel Todd recorded in her journal,
when she began studying Emily’s poems, how she felt
‘helped - as if a Kingdom - cared.’]
