The cans and packaging cans were sealed with lead solder, the water was stored in tinned tanks (the tubes of toothpaste were also tin lead!). Even fruit was sprayed with lead arsenate. Yes, yes, you remember correctly, arsenicum is arsenic. But the apotheosis of the spread of lead was its addition to motor fuel.
“But this is some kind of nonsense!” Are they purposely poisoned ?! ” - you think. In fact, everything is simple. Good citizens were poisoned not of their own free will. They were poisoned. The fact is that lead is easy to mine, process and produce. And from it you can make a substance such as tetraethyl lead (TPP). The latter not only reduces the detonation in the car’s engine, which makes it “knock” less, but also has the magical ability to make expensive gasoline out of cheap gasoline. Can you imagine what delight this caused to businessmen from the oil business? And so, General Motors, Dupont, and Standard Oil of New Jersey set up a joint venture called Ethyl Gasoline Corporation. And why, in fact, is “ethyl” and not “lead”? It’s like in “Operation Y” - “so that no one would guess!”.
From the very beginning of his activity at the factory, his employees died, poisoned and became disabled, but the company followed the policy of denial for decades. There is no harm and that's it! Once for the press, TPP inventor Thomas Midgley even poured it on his hands and held the bottle with it for a minute at his nose, declaring that he could do it at least daily without any harm. True, after that he immediately went on leave for treatment, but the press did not know about it.
In subsequent years, almost all gasoline in the United States began to contain tetraethyl lead, which could only be removed by 1986. Even now, the lead content in the body of an ordinary American is 625 times greater than its ancestor 100 years ago. For more than half a century no measures have been taken due to the strong lobby of the fuel producers. Lobby, understand ?! People’s life on one side of the scale and someone’s pocket on the other! But the disgrace could have continued even more if it were not for the graduate student of the University of Chicago, Claire Patterson, who was trying to establish the age of the Earth using a new method for studying lead isotopes. The fact is that the samples he had were contaminated with lead more than 200 times from the usual level. As a result, he still found out the true age of our planet, but the presence of a large amount of lead in the atmosphere seriously interested him. And how astounded he was when he saw that all the known facts about the effects of lead on humans were distorted or misleading! And this was not a revelation, since almost all studies on lead exposure were funded by fuel additive manufacturers. In one study of that time, volunteers were asked to inhale and ingest increasing doses of lead for 5 years. These studies were monitored using urine and stool tests. In fact, lead builds up in the blood and bones, but they, of course, have not been tested.
Claire suggested that 90% of the lead in the atmosphere got there from the exhaust pipes of cars. But to confirm this assumption, convincing evidence was needed. And Patterson got them! In Greenland. The fact is that in this country the snow that has fallen is deposited in separate layers, with minor changes in their color from winter to summer. By counting these layers, Claire could calculate the concentration of lead hundreds of years ago.
It turned out that until 1923, when tetraethyl lead was produced, there was practically no lead in the atmosphere! Patterson was so impressed that he decided to devote his whole life to fighting tetraethyl lead. In the course of the struggle, the businessmen opposing him used all possible means to silence him, cut down on funds and withdrawn funds for scientific research, and broke the contracts of institutes with Claire. The leadership of Ethyl Gasoline Corporation even offered to donate money for the maintenance of the department of the California Institute of Technology, if Patterson was not there. The last absurdity was that Claire was expelled from the Lead Pollution Commission of the National Research Council, while being a leading expert on lead pollution of the atmosphere! Ultimately, Patterson's efforts and firm convictions led to the adoption of the Clean Air Act and the prohibition of tetraethyl lead. But he spent his whole life on it! And it is not known what would happen if someone else were in his place.

Знаете с чем приходится сталкиваться прогрессивному человечеству в 21 веке? А с тем же, с чем сотни лет назад. С жадностью! Она буквально пронизывает все вокруг. Начиная с того, что из-за чьей-то жажды наживы на головы мирных людей сыплются бомбы, и заканчивая йогуртом , напичканном химией, на полке супермаркета.
Маленькая история из недавнего прошлого. Все мы знаем о вреде свинца. Свинец является нейротоксином. В больших количествах он вызывает необратимое поражение головного мозга и центральной нервной системы. Проявления отравления свинцом - потеря зрения, слуха, паралич, судороги, бессонница, потеря слуха. В самой острой форме - галлюцинации, страшные как для пострадавших, так и для их свидетелей. Финал - кома и смерть.
В начале 20-го века в США все это уже было известно. Но в то же время свинец был буквально везде и всюду. Консервные и упаковочные банки запаивались свинцовым припоем, вода хранилась в луженых баках (тюбики зубной пасты тоже лудили свинцом!). Даже фрукты опрыскивали арсенатом свинца. «Но это бред какой-то получается! Нарочно они, что ли травились?!» - подумаете вы. На самом деле все просто. Травились добропорядочные граждане не по своей воле. Их травили. Дело в том, что свинец легко добывать, обрабатывать и производить. А еще из него можно сделать такое вещество, как тетраэтилсвинец (ТЭС). Последний не только снижает детонацию в двигателе автомобиля, отчего тот меньше «стучит», но еще и обладает волшебным свойством делать из дешевого бензина дорогой. Представляете, какой восторг это вызвало у дельцов от нефтебизнеса? И вот «Дженерал моторс», «Дюпон» и «Стандард ойл оф Нью-Джерси» создали совместное предприятие, которое назвали «Этил газолин корпорейшн». А почему, собственно, «этил», а не «свинец»? Это как в «Операции Ы» - «чтоб никто не догадался!».
С самого начала его деятельности на производстве погибали, травились и становились инвалидами его работники, но компания десятки лет следовала политике отрицания. Нет никакого вреда и все тут! Однажды для прессы изобретатель ТЭС Томас Миджли даже вылил его себе на руки и целую минуту держал флакон с ним у своего носа, заявляя при этом, что может делать это хоть ежедневно без всякого вреда. Правда, после этого он срочно отбыл в отпуск на лечение, но пресса об этом уже не узнала.
В последующие годы практически весь бензин в США стал содержать тетраэтилсвинец, избавиться от которого удалось лишь к 1986 году. Даже сейчас содержание свинца в организме рядового американца в 625 раз больше, чем его предка 100 лет назад. Более полувека никаких мер не предпринималось из-за сильного лобби производителей топлива. Лобби, понимаете?! Жизнь людей на одной чаше весов и чей-то карман на другой! Но безобразие могло продолжаться и больше, если бы не аспирант Чикагского университета Клэр Паттерсон, который пытался установить возраст Земли, применяя новый метод исследования изотопов свинца. Дело в том, что имевшиеся у него образцы были загрязнены свинцом более, чем в 200 раз от обычного уровня. В итоге он все-таки выяснил истинный возраст нашей планеты, но наличие большого количества свинца в атмосфере его серьезно заинтересовало. И как же он был поражен, когда увидел, что все известные факты о воздействии свинца на человека были искажены либо вводили в заблуждение! И это не было откровением, поскольку почти все исследования о воздействии свинца финансировались производителями топливных присадок. В одном из исследований того времени добровольцам предлагалось в течение 5 лет вдыхать и употреблять внутрь возрастающие дозы свинца. Контролировались эти исследования с помощью анализов мочи и кала. На самом деле свинец накапливается в крови и костях, но они, конечно же, не проверялись.
Клэр предполагал, что 90% свинца в атмосфере попало туда из выхлопных труб автомобилей. Но для подтверждения этого предположения были нужны убедительные доказательства. И Паттерсон получил их! В Гренландии. Дело в том, что в этой стране выпавший снег откладывается отдельными слоями, с незначительными изменениями в их окраске от зимы к лету. Отсчитывая эти слои, Клэр мог вычислить концентрацию свинца на сотни лет назад.
Получалось, что до 1923 года, когда начал производится тетраэтилсвинец, самого свинца в атмосфере практически не было! Это так впечатлило Паттерсона, что он решил посвятить борьбе с тетраэтилсвинцом всю свою жизнь. В процессе борьбы противостоящие ему бизнесмены использовали все возможные способы, чтобы заставить его замолчать, урезались и отзывались средства на научные исследования, разрывались контракты институтов с Клэром. Руководство «Этил газолин корпорейшн» даже предлагало пожертвовать деньги на содержание кафедры Калифорнийского технологического института, если Паттерсона там не будет. Последним абсурдом стало то, что Клэр был исключен из комиссии по вопросам свинцового загрязнения Национального научно-исследовательского совета, являясь при этом ведущим экспертом по свинцовому загрязнению атмосферы! В конечном итоге, усилия и твердость убеждений Паттерсона привели к принятию закона о чистоте воздуха и запрещению тетраэтилсвинца. Но он потратил на это всю свою жизнь! И не известно, что было бы, окажись на его месте кто-то другой.
Сейчас, когда вы уже прочитали все это, не кажется ли вам похожей на вышеизложенную ситуация со многими другими вещами, которые нас окружают? «Нет никаких достоверных исследований», «доза\содержание слишком мало» и т.п. Ведь так говорят они? И также как Паттерсону полвека назад обыватели с усмешкой говорили: «Не отказываться же нам теперь от автомобилей? Так мы вернемся в «каменный век»!», многие говорят нечто подобное и сегодня.
