Мадонна, шлёшь мне сладкий базилик *
И резеду? Должны
Листки здоровья быть разлучены
С любовью в тот же миг.
О, да они влажны!
Что ж, поцелуй или слеза томленья?
Роса и дождь навряд
Несут тот аромат
С растений и цветов. Само сомненье
Родит любовь, я рад
Печали, что являет новый лик.

Шли звёздный свет мне, но не шли любовь, -
Сия любовь опасна:
Здоровье, словно угли, скоро гаснет--
* Сладкий базилик символизирует любовь, а резеда - здоровье

Sweet-basil and mignonette?
Embleming love and health, which never yet
In the same wreath might be.
Alas, and they are wet! _5

For never rain or dew
Such fragrance drew
From plant or flower--the very doubt endears

The sighs I breathe, the tears I shed for thee.
