My Only Dream

Сергей Поверский
This town lined the bank,
Where native peoples’ band
Have lived for very long.
The band calls this town home.

Forest feeds lumber mill,
Totem pole’s standing still.
Nobody comes to school.
Hopelessness became a rule.

Chorus.

Standing on the cliff
By the Thompson River.
(The cliff is steep and high),
Thinking to myself:
I am a dreamer,
And my only dream
Is to fly!

I want to meet a guy,
(So far no one’s come by),
Who I can tell my plan
To leave this town by the bank.

Some where’s a better life,
Which I can reach if fly!
O, Lord, please give me wings,
Help me realize my dreams!

Chorus.

My Grandma told me once:
The totem owl by (the) banks,
Stands for the other girl
Like me, tried to leave her home.

That girl stepped off the cliff.
People said she had wings.
Leaving the banks behind
This girl vanished in the sky.

Totem Pole symbols: Owl. The owl is thought to symbolize the souls of the departed.
Thompson River is in interior BC, Canada
