Dialogue with Death

Âàëåðèÿ Ïóðöåëàäçå
I had a dialogue with Death,
The most sincere of all the friends,
The only one, who need not guess
How bored I am with all myselves…
My empty room was dark and quiet
When all my hopes were gone,
And there she came in dressed in white
My frozen hand to hold.
“Look, pretty, - she began to tell
Her endless truthful tale, -
There is no Heaven and no Hell,
But just the choice you make!
Can see, where all your paths have led?
You neither lost, nor won.
Your bleeding soul is almost dead,
There’s nothing left to learn!
Do you remember those for whom
You sacrificed your all?
How distant they’ve become to you,
How far away they’ve gone…
Do you remembered lonely days
And sleepless nights of yours?
The lots of precious words you sad,
That no one ever heard…
The thoughts you cherished in your mind,
The loves that died unshared.
The bitter bloody tears you cried,
While no one ever cared…
The triumphs and downfalls of yours
Could never fill you up.
This foggy day won’t be a loss,
Here is your final stop!
I’ve brought a gift, its name is Rest!
Let’s swim! The sea is calm.
So give me now your frozen hand
And let me take you Home…”
“I won’t! – I said and turned away,
And straight was my response, –
There’s still some light, its name is Faith!
Surrender is a loss!
I’ll heal my wounds, I’ll use the right
To make one last attempt:
I’ve saved some arrows for a fight,
I’ll struggle till the end!
And when I walk down my last path
Alone, like always did,
I’ll come myself to you at last
To take your greatest gift.
And then you’ll be allowed to judge
Whether I've won or lost.
And then my frozen hand you’ll touch, –
That will be my reward!
You’ll guide me gently to your boat,
And calm the sea will be…
And then I’ll read my longest verse
For only you to hear.
And this will be the last romance
Of a human soul and Death.
You dressed in white, I dressed in black,
We’ll hold each other’s hands.
And we will go down by the stream
Into Eternity:
Not just a human soul and Death,
But Immortality!”
